Fixed term: 31.12.2026 (we are always looking to extend contracts if project funding allows)

Place of work: remote (preferably based in Germany)

Language: English (minimum C1 level), German not mandatory but a bonus

This role cannot be performed under a freelancer agreement.

As our Lead AI Engineer, you will step into a highly impactful and exciting role, building practical, production-ready AI systems that support the mental health of children and young adolescents. In a space where the need is urgent and the opportunity to make a real difference is immense, you’ll be part of a deeply committed team where you can truly move things forward. 

Your tasks:

  • Design and ship innovative AI systems (RAG, embeddings, vector databases, LLM APIs) with a strong focus on real-world impact

  • Take ownership of the technical direction and architecture of our fullstack applications

  • Translate business problems into pragmaticstaged, technical solutions

  • Own end-to-end delivery: from architecture decisions to production deployment and iteration

  • Define and drive the technical roadmap, including build vs. buy decisions

  • Collaborate cross-functionally and align stakeholders through clear, structured communication

  • Improve team decision-making by sharing context, mentoring others, and raising the technical bar

  • Ensure privacysecurity, and compliance are built into systems by default

Your profile

  • Computer Science degree and 7+ years of experience

  • Strong experience in applied AI system design (RAG, embeddings, vector databases, LLM APIs)

  • Solid fullstack engineering skills (Python, APIs, microservices, React/Next.js)

  • Proven ability to build and operate production-grade systems in cloud environments

  • Excellent communication skills — able to explain complex systems and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • High ownership and autonomy in ambiguous environments; drives topics end-to-end

  • Ability to identify high-impact use cases and avoid unnecessary complexity

  • Experience in mentoring others and contributing to team growth and development

About us

krisenchat is a nationwide, free support service for children and young adults in need. We offer children and young people professional psychosocial counseling - every day, 24 hours a day, via web application or WhatsApp. krisenchat has been available 24/7 since May 2020 - since then, our many crisis counselors have been able to help in over 200,000 crisis situations. Since March 1, 2022, krisenchat has also been offering confidential crisis counseling for Ukrainians of all ages, providing support to those particularly affected by the war. In addition to chat counseling, krisenchat now reaches millions of young people every year through psychoeducational content on various social media platforms.

We are an interdisciplinary and agile non-profit organization and work flexibly in our beautiful office in Berlin or remotely.
